My SO and myself rented a Sigma at a local range, purchasing a box of Speer Lawman .40s&w 180 grain ammunition to put through it. Cosmetically, the weapon appeared to be okay, without any major features to add or detract from its physique. Form and function were easy enough to understand, as it is a DAO only weapon without a manual safety (a'la Glock) and easy to operate, as both my SO and I were able to load the weapon and rack the slide. Fit in the hand was good for my SO, who has smaller hands than I do, and adequate for my tastes. Firing, we both found to be an unpleasant experience. The Sigma, being a light and compact gun, had an apparently sharp and heavy recoil, making it uncomfortable for me to shoot for protracted periods, and making it impossible for my SO to continue firing the weapon beyond the first twenty rounds. Double-taps were hard to control as a result of the recoil, and rapid fire groupings left much to be desired. Accuracy was fair at 8 yds, yielding about a hands-spread grouping if I concentrated. All in all, the Sigma Compact was somewhat of a disappointment. We eagerly await the opportunity to try the H&K USP Compact .40, the Beretta Mini-Cougar 8040, and perhaps a Glock offering. -- "Mulder ... where's the body?" Dana Scully, X-Files, 1/11/97 -- John E.
